project 1: Case Study of Daylight + Thermal Comfort of Modern Houses | Group Assignment | 30%

What is this assignment about?

We were to analyse daylight and thermal comfort of a modern house (Aspen Gardens house). After completing the analysis, we came up with innovative ideas on ways that will improve both daylight and the thermal comfort (without architectural changes).

REFLECTION :

I have a better understanding of stereographic and psychrometric diagrams after completing this assignment. Before this assignment, I don't even understand on how to read those diagrams but after several lectures and tutorials that I have attended, I manage to understand them slowly. Furthermore, I now understand light and thermal data, as well as plotting the findings in a chart.

project 2: Artificial Lighting Design | Group Assignment | 40%

What is this assignment about?

We were to choose a space in a building (restaurants/libraries etc) that was approximately 60 meter square and analyse its daylighting + artificial lighting using various methods such as finding the angle of visible skylight, calculating using the Lumen method and so on. With the new lighting design and layout calculated, we proceeded to detail it using technical drawings such as a reflected ceiling plan, section views + renderings that show the new lighting in day and nighttime.

REFLECTION :

Overall, this project was a interesting learning experience for me as this was the first time we got to use complex calculations, such as the lumen method and room index formula to find variables. This project also made me realise how important artificial lighting because it provides the lux needed for the space during night time and can also be used to meet the lux requirements during daytime. I now know the importance of artificial lighting in museums as well as how artificial lighting can be used to draw the users attention to an object. Thankfully, I get to work with the same group as project 1 and I am grateful for that because my team members are very responsible and very punctual with their tasks and always put extra effort into the project. The learning experience I've got from this project can definitely be applied into my future projects as well.

TGC:

Finishing this module has helped me achieve 3 TGCs. It has helped me achieve Interpersonal Skills as I learned how to work as a team better after working in Project 1 and utilized the power of teams efficiently in both group projects. It also has helped me achieve Digital Literacy, I was able to learn more on how to use SketchUp (as our 3d modeling) and rendering device which was V-ray (SketchUp plugins). Finally, I also achieved Thinking and Problem Solving Skills after completing the module because I get to utilize my critical thinking to come up with lighting ideations that are suitable for the buildings.
